NEW APPLE VARIETY, COSMIC CRISP, READY FOR PRODUCTION

The Seattle Times Featured Cosmic Crisp In An Article

WENATCHEE — A lottery for the first sales of a new apple variety bred specifically for Eastern Washington is scheduled for Friday.

The new Cosmic Crisp variety (formerly WA 38) has been in development for about 15 years, said Kate Evans, the Washington State University (WSU) scientist in charge of the apple-breeding program. “It has a lot of the characteristics that will please consumers. And we can also produce it very efficiently here,” said Jim McFerson, manager of the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission.

Cosmic Crisp was propagated from the Honeycrisp and was first bred in 1997. Growers can start planting the trees this summer, and the apple should be readily available in stores by 2019, WSU officials said.

COMPANIES PURSUE RED-FLESHED APPLES

YAKIMA, Wash. – A tree fruit varieties management company in Yakima has announced an agreement with Stemilt Growers Inc., Wenatchee, and Chelan Fresh Marketing, Chelan, to commercialize red-flesh apples to be grown in Washington.

Proprietary Variety Management has tested two unnamed varieties of red-flesh apples developed by apple breeder Bill Howell, of Prosser, and found them to be of exceptional quality, said Lynnell Brandt, president of PVM and Brandt’s Fruit Trees Inc., a Yakima nursery.

Howell is president of the Northwest Nursery Improvement Institute, an association of commercial tree fruit nurseries of which Brandt’s Fruit Trees is a member.

Stemilt and Chelan Fresh will plant test blocks to evaluate the varieties horticulturally with an eye toward marketing them in a few years, Brandt said.

It was National Dance Day here in the US and this year that celebration of dance fell on the weekend of the Hydroplane Boat Races in Tri-Cities, Washington. Thousands of race fans were on site to watch as 20 young girls joined Ali Vincent all dressed in pink and black Pink Lady® branded outfits in the flash mob dance. An added bonus to the wide exposure the flash mob received was the footage filmed for Ali’s own nationally televised reality show, Live Big With Ali Vincent on the Live Well Network. Bite of Yakima with Ali Vincent!

On June 29, 2013 Pink Lady America brought Ali Vincent to Yakima, WA for the first ever Bite of Yakima event. Pink Lady America teamed up with Sage Fruit and Memorial Hospital to bring fun and health to Yakima area residents. Ali talked to the crowd about her journey and about making good choices. Back at the Pink Lady® booth, Sage fruit generously donated Pink Lady® brand apples so we could give out healthy snacks to the masses. On a day that was well over 100 degrees, Memorial Hospital’s “Re-Think Your Drink” educational program was a huge hit! Kids and parents had the opportunity to try different fruit flavored waters as an alternative to sugary drinks and sodas. Ali Vincent was hands on to get Pink Lady® tattoos on all of her fans that came by to say hello and to get an autograph from the reality TV star. Nathan from ZumbaTomic led Ali, kids and their parents in several fun Zumba sessions. It was a great day full of fun and health in the Yakima Valley!
